Our journey. It's only just begun.

We’ve grown fast since we were officially formed as a Group. And while that happened in 2006, you can actually trace our roots back to the 1960s, when one of our most distinct brands, Habitat, was founded. Find out more about where we’ve come from – and where we’re headed.

1964–present

1964

Affordable design comes into UK homes

Sir Terence Conran opens the first Habitat store, bringing contemporary design at affordable prices to the UK.

1973

A new way of shopping hits the high street

The first 17 Argos stores open on 21 July. As the UK’s first catalogue retailer, Argos introduces a new concept in shopping to the high street.

1981

Building a DIY legend

The first two Homebase stores open, in Croydon and Leeds, on 3 March. Homebase grows to become one of the UK’s leading home and garden improvement retailers.

1998

The start of something big with Argos

Argos is purchased by home shopping giant, GUS plc, in April. Primarily a single-channel retailer with a chain of 435 stores, Argos’s core categories are jewellery, toys, electricals and housewares.

2000

Credit boom

Financial Services is formed, offering a range of credit and insurance products. These make it easier for our customers to buy the products they want, when they want them.

2002

Opening the front door for Homebase

Homebase is acquired by GUS plc. It is one of the UK’s leading home and garden improvement retailers, with a clearly differentiated and comprehensive offer. Its range, overlapping with Argos, drives economies of scale in buying while bringing a different customer demographic to the Group.

2006

A new name and a bright new future

Home Retail Group is launched following the demerger from GUS plc. At launch, it comprises Argos, Homebase and Financial Services.

2011

A British icon comes on board

The iconic Habitat brand, including its transactional website and three London stores, is bought by Home Retail Group. Its acquisition gives the Group three distinct retail brands with over 1,000 stores, three transactional websites, two mobile shopping apps and the UK’s biggest home-delivery operation – making the Group the UK’s leading multi-channel retailer.

2012 and beyond

Argos announces its five-year plan to become a digital retail leader. This transformation will see it move away from catalogues and become a digitally-led business.

In 2016, Homebase is purchased by an Australian retailer. This means Home Retail Group now consists of two main retail brands: Argos and Habitat.
