I’d been working in communications roles at Homebase for a number of years before it became part of Home Retail Group. Then an internal communications role came up in the Group, and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to broaden my horizons. Before long I moved on to become Internal Publications Manager, then Corporate Communications Manager. Then in 2013, the opportunity came up to become Corporate Affairs Manager, and that’s where I am now.
“I’m responsible for the Group’s corporate website, annual report and quarterly trading announcements. I work with our Investor Relations, Public Relations, Corporate Responsibility and Internal Communications teams to make sure the right messages get to the right audiences at the right time. And with retail brands as diverse as Argos and Habitat, it’s a varied, exciting task. There’s always something interesting going on.”
“One thing that helps keep the role exciting is change. Nothing stays the same for long, so although I’ve been with the Group a while, it feels like I’ve been working in different businesses and different roles. Things are changing especially quickly at the moment: we’re becoming more dynamic, more agile and more open. For example, we’ve rolled out Yammer to nearly 50,000 colleagues across the Group, giving them a voice and making senior management more accessible than ever.”
